Sony shuts down band Beatallica, Web site
Posted: Feb. 25, 2005
If you needed another reason to rail against the big bad record industry and how it stomps on the little guy, how about this: Local Metallica-Beatles parody act Beatallica was forced to shut down its Web site after receiving a cease-and-desist notice from Sony / ATV Music Publishing that alleged copyright infringement.
The band has received international notice for its clever sendups of both The Four Horsemen and The Fab Four, such as "I Want to Choke Your Band," and counts Metallica's own members among those who have expressed public support.
Beatallica had posted its songs online for free - until Sony opted to take legal action last week.
Fans of Beatallica quickly responded with an online petition asking that the cease-and-desist notice be lifted, arguing that, as a parody, the band is not violating copyright law.
As of Friday afternoon, more than 3,800 e-signatures in support of the band and its Web site had been received at www.petitiononline.com/p1gp0g/petition.html.
Beatallica comprises four veteran Milwaukee musicians and is up for a Wisconsin Area Music Industry Award this year in the specialty / nostalgia group category.
Neither Beatallica nor Sony / ATV returned calls seeking comment.

Re: Boycott Sony
Fri, March 4, 2005 - 11:19 AMThis is very sad. I love Beatallica and the kind of parody music they have offered to us for free.
We have already been through this with 2 Live Crew and "Pretty Woman" (Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. - 1994), a case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled that parody constituted fair use and found in favor of the group. Why hasn't Sony or anyone else ordered Weird Al Yankovic to cease and desist?
Anyway, this has me so pissed off that I have posted my entire Beatallica collection online for anyone to download for free. If you search on Beatallica you can find other sites that have their music posted for free as well. The band members themselves never intended to make any money off their music and always posted their own work for free download, so I know I am only going to anger Sony Music with this.

Re: Boycott Sony they should seek legal advice from the lawyers for the performing arts in San fran they're cheap to get legal advice..
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 2:14 AMHello,
I own the name THE ROMULANS ® as a federal trademark for bands after beating Paramount pictures corporation in the late 1980s. They should tell Sony to fuck off, I know about the law and it sounds on face value like bullshit. Have someone contact me about legal advice or they should seek legal advice from the lawyers for the performing arts in San fran they're cheap to get legal advice..
